History

In 1999, five determined Black Women in Southern New Jersey met to form a NCBW Interest Group. The women had a desire to fill a void that occurred when a former NCBW Chapter dissolved after the death of Alice D. Corsey who served as President from the mid-1980’s until her death in 1990. For the next year and a half their goal was focused upon recruitment and organizational development. By early 2001, 32 founding members who provided the financial support needed to launch the Chapter had been recruited.

On February 24, 2001, a new Chapter with 39 members was installed and chartered by the National Organization. Symbolically, the installation ceremony was held in the Alice D. Corsey Courtroom, which is located in the Deptford Township Municipal Building in Deptford, NJ. The Chapter has continued to grow and thrive since then.

Since the Chapter’s inception, it has provided remarkable programs and initiated a network to enhance the knowledge and growth of women of color in our surrounding communities in the areas of health, economic development, education and leadership development.

Mission

  • Provide effective networks among prominent women of color.
  • Establish links between NCBW and the corporate and political sectors.
  • Enable African Americans to be a visible force in economic, social and political arenas.
  • Take the next generation, through role modeling and mentoring, into new career opportunities within the corporate arena.
  • Develop the potential of the membership for effective leadership and participation in civic affairs.
  • Co-operate with other organizations to achieve mutual goals.
  • Foster principles of equal rights and opportunities for women of color and to promote awareness of black culture.
